Any major development project anywhere in the world usually requires the production of an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA). Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a major requirement for developmental projects. The concept of ESIA’s is gaining momentum in Afghanistan. These studies have become the need of the day given the implementation of major development and infrastructure projects. The country is heavily relying on the expertise and services of institutions of foreign origin. While some local institutions offer ESIAs, it doesn’t meet growing demand for such services. Realizing this need and building on the success of its past engagement in some ESIAs, ELCS offers ESIA services to national and international organizations. ELCS is well-aware of the ESIA guidelines prepared and recommended by different institutions (the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank guidelines, the JICA ESIA environmental considerations, National Environmental Protection Agency Guidelines and the Environmental Law of Afghanistan) and follows these guidelines to conduct ESIAs.
